In the footsteps of the Sacrum

Description of the tour

In the Footsteps of the Sacred is a unique guided tour taking visitors through works from the collection of Gothic painting and sculpture – from the temporary exhibition ‘Gothic in the Carpathians’ to the permanent exhibition at the MNK Ciołek in Kraków. All this is included in a single ticket.

This proposed tour route weaves a coherent narrative about late medieval art and its subsequent evolution. It offers a glimpse into Gothic painting and sculpture as an extraordinarily diverse art form – dignified and austere, yet at the same time quiet, contemplative and humble.

The tour will cover two branches of the National Museum in Kraków – it will begin in the MNK Main Building, where the exhibition “Gothic in the Carpathians” presents carefully selected paintings and sculptures brought from nine countries, and will then lead to Bishop Ciołek’s Palace (MNK Ciołek), which houses the largest collection of icons in Central Europe. The proposed tour route encourages visitors to broaden their knowledge of both the Gothic style and the art of the Carpathians, as well as its diverse forms present in religious sculpture and architectural details.

A special catalogue has also been produced for the exhibition ‘Gothic in the Carpathians’

The exhibition Gothic in the Carpathians at the MNK Main Building showcases medieval art from Central and Eastern Europe. The exhibition demonstrates that the Carpathian mountain ranges did not divide but connected – artistic trends intermingled, the same workshops operated on both sides of the mountains, and paintings and sculptures travelled in both directions. The exhibition features around a hundred paintings and sculptures brought from ten countries, supplemented by photographic documentation of wall paintings and architectural sculptures that cannot be moved to the exhibition space. This creates a broad and rich picture of the art and culture of our region at the end of the Middle Ages. It is well worth seeing one of Master Paul of Levoča’s finest sculptures – the Pensive Christ from Prešov Cathedral – as well as the only surviving fragment of the famous Esztergom Crucifix – a work stylistically very close to the monumental crucifix on the rood beam in St Mary’s Church in Kraków.

Accordion content:

The Ciołek Palace – a gothic-renaissance residence on Kanonicza Street – houses outstanding examples of religious art, which allow visitors to trace the subsequent development of the Gothic style and its transformation. Particularly noteworthy are the sculptures by Veit Stoss, Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and Christ Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, from the cemetery at St Mary’s Church in Kraków. It is worth pausing before the Madonna of Krużlowa, a unique example of International Gothic, the so-called beautiful style, characterised by refined features, subtlety of form and delicacy. Also deserving of special attention is the wooden sculpture Christ on a Donkey from the parish church of St Sigismund in Szydłowiec. This remarkable prop was used during the spectacular procession on Palm Sunday – as Christ rode by, the townspeople of Kraków threw willow twigs and flowers at his feet, whilst the priest whipped the donkey.
