The permanent exhibition at the MNK Czartoryski Museum showcases Poland’s most valuable art collection and one of the finest in Europe. It is here that you will see masterpieces of world painting – Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine and Rembrandt van Rijn’s Landscape with the Good Samaritan. As you explore the historic interiors, you will learn about the history of this unique collection and the life of the museum’s founder, Izabela Czartoryska. Her passion and desire to preserve mementos of the past were closely linked to the spirit of the age, which sought traces of bygone history in various ‘curiosities’. In addition to valuable artefacts, this meant, among other things, the acquisition of copies, forgeries and often amusing “relics” associated with important figures – including fictional ones. Izabela’s fascinating collection has found its home in the original 19th-century display cases at the MNK Czartoryski Museum’s Klasztorek (Monastery).
At the museum of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, a prominent Polish collector, numismatist, bibliophile, and collector of prints, works of art and Polish memorabilia, you will find the most valuable collection of Polish coins, medals and banknotes ever assembled. The Czapski’s numismatic collection, which continues to grow, now numbers over 100,000 items, of which the 2,500 most valuable can be admired at the exhibition in the Czapski’s Palace. The interiors of the neoclassical building are particularly noteworthy, featuring preserved original bookcases and display cabinets which, in addition to the numismatic items, showcase parts of a library of old prints and manuscripts totalling around 26,000 items, forming part of the National Museum in Kraków’s collection.
