The Collections Department at the National Museum in Kraków is responsible for documenting and managing the museum’s collections. Its main task is to maintain inventories – detailed records of all items in the collection, which comprises over a million objects.
The department also handles the registration of new acquisitions – such as purchases, donations or deposits – and oversees the movement of museum objects, e.g. their loan for exhibitions. An important part of the work is also the inventory check (known as a stock-take), which allows the condition of the objects to be verified and ensures that the documentation matches the actual number of items.
Furthermore, it supports the museum’s research activities by providing information on the collections and facilitating research enquiries. As a result, it plays a key role in collection management and the protection of cultural heritage.
