This is one of the artist’s few works with a religious theme. In creating it, Witkacy undertook to depict the temptation of the saint in a new, grotesque form. It goes beyond earlier patterns consistent with the hermit’s hagiography. Through the use of colour, composition, shapes, and by giving the figures a different dimension, the artist combined Formalist doctrine with a fantastical form.
