Metal and Weapons Conservation Studio

The Metal and Weapons Conservation Studio is one of the oldest conservation studios at the National Museum in Krakow – extant since 1906. It is engaged in the comprehensive renovation of historic metal objects , including reconstruction work. The studio specializes in the conservation of objects made of mixed materials, e.g. military artefacts or decorative arts.

The most valuable objects which have undergone conservation at the studio include:

• Hetman Stefan Jabłonowski’s karacena armour
• reliquary cross from a gift of King Władysław II Jagiełło, kept at the Cathedral in Sandomierz
• the Treasure of Środa Śląska
• portable Augsburg altar donated to the Jasna Góra monastery in 1708 by Konstanty Sobieski, son of King Jan III Sobieski
• Sigismund I the Old’s sword from Wawel Cathedral
• the silver altarpiece from the Sigismund Chapel at Wawel Cathedral

Conservation procedures are performed on an ongoing basis for objects in the Department of Military Collections and the Department of Decorative Arts of the National Museum in Krakow.
