The exhibition ‘Gothic in the Carpathians’ is the first attempt to present a comprehensive overview of late medieval art across all the countries in the region. Through a collection of around one hundred paintings and sculptures, brought from nine countries, supplemented by photographic documentation of immovable works (wall paintings, architectural sculpture) produced specifically for the exhibition, we present the Carpathians as an artistic region characterised by continuous development, where one work of art gave rise to the next. For on both sides of the mountains the same artistic circles were active; paintings and sculptures were sent in both directions, just as artistic trends intermingled here.
The exhibition not only presents new discoveries resulting from ongoing conservation work or field research, but also provides an opportunity to verify, first-hand, attributions made long ago. We are also taking the opportunity to reunite – even if only temporarily – works of art whose elements were once scattered.
