MNK The Szymanowski

Karol Szymanowski (1882–1937) was a composer, pianist, educator, writer and publicist. In the history of music, he is remembered as the creator of works for piano, violin, and symphony orchestra. His achievements are distinguished by inspirations of the Orient and folklore.

His works, which feature motifs taken from the musical folklore of Mazovia, Kujawy, and in particular Podhale, provided him with international publicity. A reference to Highlander culture is the ballet Harnasie, which premiered in Prague (1935), Paris (1936) and Poznań (1938).

The biographical exhibition, devoted to the person and work of Karol Szymanowski, fills the rooms of the Zakopane villa “Atma”, where the artist lived in 1930-1935. The heart of the exhibition is the reconstructed composer’s office, where you can see autographs of notes, photographs and memorabilia of Szymanowski. An important space in the interiors of “Atma” is also a room with a piano, enabling the organization of small concerts.
