This symbolic self-portrait of the young artist expresses important aesthetic ideas of the Young Poland movement. Standing in profile, Weiss gazes at the viewer. The apparent calm emanating from his facial expression and muted colours is disrupted by the motif of masks held in his hands. One of them is the mask of a satanic woman who kills while providing pleasure. Created under Parisian influence, the painting addresses the conflict between the battle of the sexes and the metaphysics of art.
