A Woman Combing Her Hair is a unique work by Ślewiński due to its combination of Art Nouveau form and Young Poland sensuality. The painting depicts a woman combing her long, copper-gold hair. The oval mirror shown on the canvas reflects a face sometimes interpreted as a self-portrait of the painter. The work was created while Ślewiński was under the influence of artists in Paul Gauguin’s circle. Inspirations for the work also include the art of Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, which the painter encountered during his stay in France.
