Throughout his life, Stanis\u0142aw Wyspia\u0144ski painted portraits and selfportraits \u2013 some were commissioned, others were for his own use. They are characterised by their depiction of the subjects in a personal, informal light, in moments of contemplation or sleep. The artist\u2019s children were his favourite models.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wyspia\u0144ski\u2019s significance for Polish culture is paramount. He is one of those artists whose life and relationships have been the subject of research across various disciplines for decades. His life and creative inspirations are reflected in letters, memoirs, but above all in the pastel portraits of his wife and children, which depict the family in an intimate light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanis\u0142aw Wyspia\u0144ski was born in Krak\u00f3w on Krupnicza Street, in a house belonging to the family of his mother, Maria n\u00e9e Rogowska. Following his mother\u2019s death, during his childhood and youth, Wyspia\u0144ski lived with his father, Franciszek, and with the family of his aunt, Joanna Stankiewicz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist\u2019s family life is linked to Krak\u00f3w and the nearby villages of \u015awi\u0105tniki, W\u0119grzce and Bronowice. Characteristic views and plants typical of the region, such as wildflowers, inspired Wyspia\u0144ski in his work, appearing in his polychromes, stained-glass windows and drawings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanis\u0142aw Wyspia\u0144ski was married to Teodora Teofila Pytko and was the father of their children. The Wyspia\u0144skis\u2019 family life was the subject of gossip and controversy in conservative Krak\u00f3w.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist married a maid from a village near Krak\u00f3w, a young woman with an illegitimate son, Teodor, whom he adopted. Before the wedding, the couple had two children: Helena and Mieczys\u0142aw, and after the wedding, their youngest, Stanis\u0142aw. Wyspia\u0144ski\u2019s choice was linked to the trend of \u2018peasant mania\u2019, to which several other artists of the Young Poland era succumbed. One of them was Lucjan Rydel, whose wedding inspired Wyspia\u0144ski to write the most famous play of the era: Wesele<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
