{"id":33711,"date":"2026-04-23T07:45:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T07:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.mnk.pl\/zakonczenie-procesu-anoksji\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T08:03:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:03:04","slug":"completion-of-the-anoxia-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.mnk.pl\/en\/completion-of-the-anoxia-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Completion of the Anoxia process"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From medieval parchments to prints attributed to Johannes Gutenberg\u2019s printing press \u2013 317 linear metres of Poland\u2019s most valuable literary artefacts have just been conserved using the anoxia method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have completed the <strong>anoxia<\/strong> process covering <strong>317 linear metres of the most valuable collections of the MNK Czartoryski Museum in Krak\u00f3w<\/strong>. The treatment was carried out using the <strong>VELOXY\u00ae (VEry Low OXYgen)<\/strong> system \u2013 a technology based on creating an environment almost completely devoid of oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under such controlled conditions, all forms of pests are eliminated <strong>without the use of chemicals and without risk to delicate historical materials<\/strong>. As a result, anoxia is currently recognised as <strong>one of the safest and most effective methods of protecting historical library and archival collections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the <strong>manuscript collections of the MNK Czartoryski Museum in Krak\u00f3w<\/strong> has undergone this process, including extremely valuable parchment documents issued by popes, emperors, kings and princes, as well as numerous privileges and land grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the preserved exhibits is, among others, the <strong>Privilege of Koszyce<\/strong>, which in 2024 was inscribed on the <strong>Polish national list of the UNESCO \u2018Memory of the World\u2019 programme<\/strong>. Protection was also extended to medieval and early modern <strong>illuminated manuscripts<\/strong>, which are among the most valuable parts of the collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The oldest book in the library\u2019s collection \u2013 the so-called Visigothic Bible from the first half of the 10th century<\/strong>, one of the oldest surviving literary artefacts in Poland \u2013 has also undergone an anoxic treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the more recent exhibits, <strong>Fryderyk Chopin\u2019s \u201cRondo \u00e0 la Krakowiak\u201d<\/strong>, dedicated to Anna Czartoryska (n\u00e9e Sapieha), has also been preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process also covered materials digitised as part of the project <strong>\u201cMNK Czartoryski Museum of the National Museum in Krak\u00f3w \u2013 expansion and modernisation of the National Museum branch in Krak\u00f3w\u201d<\/strong>, including part of <strong>Tek Naruszewicz<\/strong> \u2013 a unique collection of sources on Polish history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The most valuable part of the collection of old prints<\/strong> has also undergone deacidification, including priceless <strong>incunabula and curiosities<\/strong>, which determine the exceptional status of the MNK Czartoryski Museum\u2019s collection on a national scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them are true world-class rarities, such as <strong>a unique copy of the \u201cDiurnale Cracoviense\u201d from 1494<\/strong> and <strong>the prayer book \u201cHorae Beatae Mariae Virginis\u201d, printed in Paris at the end of the 15th century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protection has also been extended to <strong>the oldest printed work in the collection<\/strong>, attributed to <strong>Johannes Gutenberg\u2019s<\/strong> printing press \u2013 <em>\u201cDialogus rationis et conscientiae\u201d<\/em> by Mateusz of Krak\u00f3w, dating from around 1460.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process also made it possible to preserve the first works published on Polish soil at <strong>Kasper Straube\u2019s<\/strong> printing house, as well as extremely rare <strong>works in Polish from Stanis\u0142aw Polak\u2019s printing house in Seville<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True milestones of Polish culture were also subjected to the anoxia process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from the first edition of <strong>Jan Kochanowski\u2019s \u201cOdprawa pos\u0142\u00f3w greckich\u201d<\/strong>, through Maciej Miechowit\u2019s pioneering history of Poland, <strong>\u201cChronica Polonorum\u201d<\/strong>, right up to the monumental <strong>Statute of \u0141aska of 1506<\/strong>, printed on parchment and containing the first printed version of the hymn <strong>\u201cBogurodzica\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the anoxic treatment, these priceless testimonies to history and culture have been <strong>successfully preserved for future generations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Total project cost:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PLN 56,194,788.50<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund: PLN 37,181,150.41<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#EUFunds #EuropeanFunds<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"92\" src=\"https:\/\/mnk.pl\/images\/upload\/biblio%20log.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From medieval parchments to prints attributed to Johannes Gutenberg\u2019s printing press \u2013 317 linear metres of Poland\u2019s most valuable literary artefacts have just been conserved using the anoxia method.
